How much does a 3D printed lamp cost?
A lamp of 2–4 parts (shade, base, socket holder) costs 1,900 credits to design, then the print is paid in US dollars, at the price shown before you order: with no instructions, the AI aims for a delivered print budget of $46–137; for a lamp 20 cm tall, expect ≈ $40–63 in PETG (estimate). Only the pre-wired cord set and the LED bulb come on top, bought ready to plug in.
Design
In credits, once per generation; chat messages and edits are charged separately, while sliders, quotes and renders cost no credits.

What brings the price down
- thin the non-structural walls
- split it into smaller pieces
- switch to printed PETG (redo the safety calculation)
The shade is often the part that weighs most in the price: thin walls and a pierced pattern reduce the material. A large pendant can be split into pieces that fit together, which opens printing up to more materials.
How do you design your own lamp and have it made?
- Measure your socket and your spaceThe socket type (E27 or E14), the diameter of its fixing ring, the ceiling height or the space available on the table.
- Describe the shape and the lightBell, cone, cylinder, facets; soft diffused light, or a pattern thrown by a pierced shade. An inspiration photo helps.
- Give the size and your budgetThe lamp's height or the shade's diameter: size sets the price. Pick a budget range, or let the AI decide.
- Check the 3D previewThe AI plans the socket recess, the cable channel and the space around the bulb. Adjust diameter and height with the sliders, for free, and give each part a colour: “black base, white shade” in the chat, or the Materials tab.
- Order, then plug inThe printed parts arrive with an assembly guide; the electrics, a pre-wired cord set and an LED bulb, are listed with an Amazon link. Nothing to wire: the socket tightens by hand into its printed holder.
What the AI will ask you
- Give the lamp's height or the shade's diameter: size sets the price.
- Say your cord set's socket type (E27 or E14) and its ring diameter, or let the AI pick one, ready to plug in.
- Pick a delivered print budget range, or “No limit”.
- Say where the light will go: hanging, on a table, on a wall, near a window.
- Say the light you want: soft and diffused, or a pattern thrown on the walls.
Who supplies the socket, cable and bulb for a printed lamp?
You do, and it's the only exception: electricity can't be printed. objekto designs and prints the shade, the base and the socket holder; the electrics are a pre-wired cord set (socket, cable, switch, plug) and an LED bulb, sold ready to plug in and listed in the assembly guide with an Amazon link. Nothing to strip or wire.
- objekto doesn't wire the lamp and certifies no light fitting.
- Choose an LED bulb: it runs cool. An incandescent or halogen bulb can warp the shade.
- Keep the space the AI planned between the bulb and the shade.
- A cord set with a plug goes into a wall socket; a light wired into the ceiling or a wall is a job for an electrician.
Can you get a made-to-measure lampshade for an existing E27 socket?
Yes: measure the diameter of your socket's fixing ring and the space available, and the AI designs the shade around it, with a recess for the ring. It also works to replace the broken shade of a lamp you already own, E27 or E14.
- Measure the ring with callipers: it's what holds the shade.
- Give the diameter and height you want, or the space under the ceiling.
- Say whether the shade should diffuse the light (clear resin) or cut it into patterns (pierced design).
Vases, wall hooks and other decor objects have their own page: made-to-measure home decor.
Which material should you choose for a lampshade?
- Clear resin (SLA): the material for soft light, with a frosted-glass look. It yellows under UV and softens in heat: LED only, and away from a south-facing window.
- White PA12 (SLS): it cuts a pierced pattern cleanly and stays strong for a base, a wall light or a socket holder.
- Printed PETG (FDM): the “Economy” option, in several colours; the visible layers draw fine ribs that play with the light. It copes with heat better than PLA.
| Material | Min. wall | Min. detail | Min. clearance | Max. size (mm) | Properties | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| PA12 white (SLS) | 0.7 mm | 0.2 mm | 0.5 mm | 650 × 550 × 350 | rigid · outdoor | $ |
| PA12 dyed black (SLS) | 0.7 mm | 0.2 mm | 0.5 mm | 320 × 230 × 180 | rigid · outdoor | $ |
| PA12 dyed colours (SLS) | 0.7 mm | 0.2 mm | 0.5 mm | 320 × 230 × 180 | rigid | $ |
| PA12 vapour smoothed (SLS) | 1.5 mm | 0.5 mm | 0.7 mm | 440 × 375 × 345 | rigid · outdoor | $$ |
| Clear resin (SLA, Watershed XC)rules to be confirmed | 1 mm | 0.4 mm | 0.2 mm | 790 × 790 × 590 | rigid | $$ |
| PETG (FDM) | 0.5 mm | 0.5 mm | 0.5 mm | 300 × 300 × 300 | rigid · outdoor | $ |
Compare the materials: PA12 vs resin vs TPU.
What won't objekto do for lighting?
- No electrical work: objekto doesn't wire, doesn't supply the electrical parts and certifies no light fitting.
- LED only: a bulb that runs hot can warp the shade.
- Never a flame: no candle in a printed light fitting.
- Clear resin yellows in sunlight: keep it indoors, away from a very sunny window.
- No outdoor or bathroom light fittings guaranteed to be waterproof.
- No copies of a designer's or a brand's lamp: protected designs are refused.

Start from a 3D file
Drawn a lampshade yourself, or found an openly licensed model (STL, 3MF, OBJ or STEP)? Import it: the AI adapts it to your socket and dimensions, checks the space around the bulb, then has it printed. Respect the original model's licence.
Frequently asked questions
How much does a custom 3D printed lampshade cost?
Expect 950 credits to design a shade on its own, or 1,900 credits for a lamp of 2–4 parts, then the print price in US dollars, delivery included, shown before you order. With no instructions, the AI aims for a delivered print budget of $46–137; the diameter, wall thickness and material make up most of the price. The pre-wired cord set and the LED bulb are bought separately, ready to plug in.
Can I design my own lamp without knowing 3D modelling?
Yes: describe the shape, the light you want and the dimensions, and add an inspiration photo if you have one. objekto designs the shade, the base and the socket holder in parametric CAD, shows the 3D preview and lets you adjust dimensions with the sliders. No software to install; the electrical parts are bought separately.
Can a light bulb warp a 3D printed lampshade?
A bulb that runs hot, yes: an incandescent or halogen bulb can warp resin or PA12. With an LED bulb, which stays cool, and the space the AI plans around it, the shade stays clear of the heat. It isn't a certified light fitting: choose a low-wattage LED.
Can I get 3D printed pendant lights for a café or a shop?
Yes: several identical pendants can be ordered together, up to 100 copies and $2,278 incl. VAT per online order; above that, a custom quote. Choose a material that stays consistent from one copy to the next, such as white PA12. objekto doesn't install anything: an electrician connects pendants to the ceiling.
Does light shine through a 3D printed lampshade?
Yes in clear resin, which diffuses a soft light like frosted glass. White PA12 is fairly opaque: the light passes through the cut-outs of the pattern and draws shadows on the walls. Tell the AI the effect you want, diffusion or pattern, and it chooses the wall thickness and the openings.
How long does it take to receive a 3D printed lamp?
Allow 1 to 3 weeks (estimate) for manufacturing and delivery in France, depending on the material; design only takes a few minutes. It's an estimate, not a guaranteed date. The electrical parts, bought separately, arrive on their own. Delivery details are in the FAQ.
